Positions & Issues Committee

The Positions and Issues Committee consists of members of the Washington State Paralegal Association ("WSPA") interested in actively monitoring legislative activity in Washington and other states regarding paralegal licensure, certification, registration and examinations.

The P&I Committee also monitors other Associations and Boards within the state of Washington that may discuss these issues. The Committee actively seeks feedback from WSPA members as to general opinions and concerns about regulation proposals that may affect Washington's traditional and non-traditional paralegals.

Recent projects include:

  • Preparing information and resources to educate paralegals about the Washington Practice of Law Board ("POLB") and how its actions may affect the paralegal profession;

  • Soliciting feedback from WSPA members to determine if they want WSPA to provide comments to the POLB to help shape its policies and decisions, and, if so, what comments to provide;

  • Meeting with WSPA Chapters to discuss specific provisions of the recently enacted Arizona Legal Document Preparer's Act and to obtain member comments on the desirability of implementing a similar Act here in Washington State;

  • Preparing and analyzing survey questions to elicit members' thoughts on specific provisions of a proposed "Independent Paralegal Rule" or a "Legal Document Preparer Rule", and drafting comments for the WSPA Board to potentially present to the Practice of Law Board.
