Speakers:

  Brian G. Bodine

Brian Bodine is a Partner in Merchant & Gould's Seattle office where his practice is focused on patent, trademark, and trade secret litigation. Brian has argued cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  He has practiced in numerous United States District Courts throughout the country. He has served as a court-appointed expert to address issues relating to claim interpretation, infringement, and validity. He is a qualified Rule 39.1 mediator for intellectual property disputes in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington.  In addition to his private practice, Brian is an adjunct Professor of Law at Seattle University School of Law, where he teaches Patent and Trade Secret Law. He served as President of the Washington State Patent Law Association and is currently the Secretary/Treasurer for the Executive Committee of the IP Section of the Washington State Bar Association.

Lauren Cole, R.P.

Lauren M. Cole is the Automated Legal Support Manager at Foster Pepper, PLLC.  Prior to her employment with Foster Pepper, Lauren worked for eight years as a senior paralegal in a national law firm specializing in complex litigation and claims management.  Lauren has over 16 years of experience as a paralegal in the areas of insurance defense and insurance coverage litigation.  She has given several presentations on trial preparation, document drafting, and the use of legal technology in the law office.  Lauren is a part-time instructor in legal technology at the Highline Community College Paralegal Program.  She has also been a guest speaker on both technology and the paralegal profession at the Edmonds Community College Paralegal Program.  Lauren received her paralegal certificate in 1991. She earned her Registered Paralegal (RP) credential in June 2006 by successfully passing the PACE exam.  She is currently completing her Bachelors of Arts degree through Washington State University.

Deborah Dowd, Esq.

Deborah Dowd, currently a freelance research and writing attorney, has practiced in the areas of criminal law and procedure, judicial rules and procedure, and insurance coverage and defense.  She has also taught legal research and writing to first- and second-year law students at the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle University) and in the paralegal programs at Edmonds Community College and Highline Community College.

 Elva Gonzalez

Elva Gonzalez is a senior paralegal with the law firm of Perkins Coie where her main responsibility is in the area of litigation, with an emphasis on antitrust law. Ms. Gonzalez received both her B.A. degree and her paralegal certificate from the University of Washington. As a member of WSPA, Ms. Gonzalez has served as president and Seattle director and National Federation of Paralegal Association's vice president and director of membership. Ms. Gonzalez assisted with the creation and implementation of the E-Discovery section for the University of Washington's Paralegal Program.

  Kate Hendricks

Kate Hendricks is a principal of the Northwest law firm Hendricks & Lewis.  Ms. Hendricks represents publishers, manufacturers, internet businesses, trademark owners, musicians, writers, software developers and others and concentrates her practice in the areas of copyright, trademark and unfair trade practices. She is an experienced litigator, mediator and arbitrator and counsels clients on a wide range of business issues, including licenses, advertising and packaging.

Ms. Hendricks is a past chair of the Intellectual Property Section of the Washington State Bar Association and has served as Special District Counsel to the State Bar Association on intellectual property matters. She assisted in the development of Washington state legislation to protect rights of publicity and is the past chair of the Right of Publicity Subcommittee of the International Trademark Association and as such has been responsible for drafting a federal right of publicity bill. She has chaired the trademark section of the University of Washington Intellectual Property certificate program, is a member of the federal Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel, and is the author of the "Intellectual Property" chapter of the Washington Civil Practice Deskbook. She is also a panel member of the American Arbitration Association, and the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. mediation and arbitration programs. She has served as the arbitrator in more than 120 matters.

  Robert G. Nylander

Robert Nylander has been a partner at Cutler Nylander & Hayton since 1990. His present practice focuses on commercial litigation in the areas of business disputes, real estate, intellectual property, and government regulation of business. He received his J.D. from the University of Washington in 1987 and serves on the WSBA International Section Committee as well as the King County Bar Association’s Labor Law Section.

Janet Olejar

Janet Olejar is Director of the Tacoma Community College paralegal program. She graduated from the University of Washington Law School in Seattle. As a lawyer, Ms. Olejar has worked in the areas of estate planning, appellate practice, personal injury, guardianship, and business law.  Before earning her J.D. degree, she received a Washington State teaching certificate with a B.A. in English. She taught English in Germany and Ethiopia and then returned to study linguistics for two years in graduate school.

Ms. Olejar was recently acknowledged for her efforts in securing ABA approval for the Tacoma Community College paralegal program. The Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association presented Janet with its Outstanding Service Award for Exemplary Service to the Pierce County Legal Community on February 8, 2007 at its Lincoln Day banquet.

Marcia Remington

Marcia Remington, PHR, is the current Manager of Staffing, Training and Development at Foster Pepper PLLC.   Her background includes a combination of Human Resources Management experience and business expertise.   Ms. Remington has spent nearly twenty-five years of her career in Human Resource Management positions in mid-size law firms of 200+ staff and attorneys, specializing in training and development, coaching, employee relations, conflict resolution, and recruiting. Ms. Remington was educated at Washington State University and holds her PHR (Professional in Human Resources Certification from SHRM).  She is an active member of SHRM and the local chapter, LWHRA. She is also a member of the American Society of Training and Development.

 Douglas D. Walsh

Douglas D. Walsh has been an Assistant Attorney General with the Washington Attorney General's Office since 1981. He is the Chief of the Consumer Protection Division. While he handles a wide variety of consumer protection issues, he has developed an emphasis in automotive sales and repair.  He worked with industry and the Legislature to enact significant amendments to the Automotive Repair Act in 1993 and the Consumer Leasing Act in 1995. He was lead counsel in the auto loan “packing” cases and facilitated the NAAG Resolution in March 1999 condemning the misrepresentation of monthly payments in auto sales negotiations.  Mr. Walsh has co-authored a layperson's consumer reference book entitled: Getting Unscrewed and Staying That Way (Henry Holt, 1993).  Prior legal experience includes: Assistant Attorney General positions in Torts, Labor & Industries and Department of Corrections Divisions and a two year appointment to the Washington State Parole Board. He was chair of the WSBA, Consumer Protection Committee (Unauthorized Practice of Law) from 1996 to 1998.  He was selected as a 1995 AGO Employee of the Year and designated Senior Counsel by the Attorney General in September 2000.  He is a 1980 graduate of the Seattle University School of Law (formerly University of Puget Sound School of Law.)
